#30DaysWild No. 19 a ‘training day’ for the Devon Countryside Access Forum took Maggie to Devon’s new Pegasus Trail.
It runs north of Okehampton towards Cookworthy Forest. Two big sections are now open. This trail is completely different to the Tarka Trail or Exe Estuary route – much more rural. There are lots of gates and a much rougher and varied surface. Basically it’s a route for traversing the countryside away from the road. You can start at Okehampton Station, where there’s a bike hire shop – only about 12 miles from the lodges at Wheatland Farm.
The Pegaus Trail is a ‘multi use trail’ – where you’re allowed to walk, or ride either a horse or a bicycle (no motor bikes). In fact it’s the first new bridlepath in Devon for decades. It’s not a commuting route, so it’s likely to stay quiet for the foreseeable future. So it will be a fun off-road explore for adults and competent younger riders. And there are lots of links to footpaths that will appeal to walkers.
It’s a great way to explore this part of rural Devon. From a Wheatland Farm perspective – we’ll do a bit more exploring and suggest some circular routes for our in due course. So we’ll be looking into the Pegasus Trail more in future, and including it in our ideas for days out.
