Cosy Honeysuckle eco lodge’s big south-facing picture windows and veranda overlook grassland at Wheatland Farm, with views towards Dartmoor. It’s a great place for your Devon escape.

In spring and autumn it’s a fabulous and peaceful retreat, with birdsong at your doorstep. Couples love to get way from it all and simply relax (you can book the eco hot tub / outside bath, sunk into the veranda). In summer, Honeysuckle Lodge is a great spot for a family holiday, and there’s room for four people. You can easily keep an eye on children as they play in the meadow, and they can borrow bikes or take a boat out on the pond.

Unobtrusive on the outside, inside Honeysuckle lodge is light, cosy and warm with plenty of quirky upcycled style, such as the piano cover headboard and the cable drum coffee table. Read on for more information, or check availability.

What makes this an eco lodge?

The timber lodge construction is very low carbon, and Honeysuckle Lodge is sustainably provisioned, with 100% renewable energy, fabulous insulation and super efficient appliances. And then there’s the fun outdoor bath / eco hot tub, sunk into the deck. But all that’s not enough on it’s own. Part of its eco lodge credentials come from the way Wheatland Farm is managed for wildlife. We’ve been rewilding since 2006. Our wildlife friendly and low carbon ethos extends from wildlife recording through to excellent recycling and choosing green suppliers and partners. But you can read more about Wheatland Farm’s environmental approach elsewhere on this website. For now, let’s tell you about what’s in Honeysuckle Eco Lodge itself.

Eco Lodge Facilities

The lodge has:

  • Double room
  • Cross-over bunk room
  • Large living area with a sofa bed (but max 4 guests in Honeysuckle Eco Lodge please).
  • Kitchen area with microwave, conventional (electric) oven, induction hob, fridge freezer, toaster, kettle, utensils, crockery and cutlery
  • TV and WiFi.
  • Bathroom with loo, basin and shower (grab rail near the entrance). We can provide a baby bath if needed.
  • Eco Hot Tub, sunken into the veranda, bookable per evening. It’s cheaper than the conventional larger hot tubs on Beech Lodge and Balebarn (which fit several people) and is charged per day not per stay. This is because it’s a bath (standard size), using fewer chemicals but needing regular water changes and full cleaning. You can book once you’ve checked the weather forecast, and the charge of £10 includes set up with lighting for the evening, filling, heating (this takes several hours so let us know in advance), 2 extra towels, hot tub glasses, draining late at night and cleaning the following morning.

Honeysuckle Lodge’s solar hot water has immersion back up, and your power is from our 11kW wind turbine (and green grid backup). So yours will be a low carbon holiday, almost as green as Devon’s countryside! Our sustainability measures have twice won Wheatland Farm the VisitEngland Gold Award for Sustainable Tourism.

When you stay in Honeysuckle Eco Lodge, your heating and bedlinen/towels are included in the price of your holiday. And to say ‘Welcome to Devon‘ we like to bring you some scones (Vegan? Let us know and we’ll rustle up an alternative).

Can I charge my electric car at the eco lodge?

Wheatland Farm has an electric car charging point at the old farmhouse, an untethered PodPoint 7.5Kw, where you can charge and pay with the PodPoint app. (Actually, our tether is almost always there, but please don’t entirely rely on that). We also have a 2Kw three pin socket outlet as a back up, so please bring your older-style cable as well. We only have the one PodPoint charging point – so if it’s important to you, please be in touch when you book your holiday. Please note, you can’t charge from the lodge’s domestic power points.

At And Near Wheatland Farm

There’s lots to do at Wheatland Farm. Start by taking your coffee on the veranda. Or if there’s family holiday mayhem to escape and you’re not ‘on duty’, try the quiet of the Turbine Room. Need clear water between you and the rest of the world? Take the paddle boards and boat on the wildlife pond and look for summer dragonflies… Then there are bikes to borrow , outdoor chess/draughts to play, a mown court for badminton/volleyball, or ask us about a free guided nature walk around Wheatland Farm. At the end of the day, relax on Honeysuckle Lodge’s veranda and watch the birds at the feeder. Or just enjoy a BBQ or camp fire in the meadow – there’s a dedicated shared camp fire area, complete with hand wash facilities, picnic table with seating, and a stone preparation table.

Close to Honeysuckle Eco Lodge, in this part of Devon

Half a mile up the road (just 2 mins on one of Wheatland Farm’s bikes) you’ll find a small and genuinely rural farm shop run by Fiona and her family. Try excellent home cooked food here, or just a coffee. Winkleigh village is two miles away from Wheatland Farm (less than 10 mins on a bike, or about 25 minutes walk) with a good butcher who also sells local milk and veg. In Winkleigh square you’ll find the Kings Arms Pub, the Seven Stars pub, a convenience store, post office, and around the corner don’t miss Catkin Blooms, an eco friendly florist and gift shop with barista coffee, non-dairy milks, and vegan cake options too.

Day out type attractions close to Wheatland Farm’s eco lodges include RHS Rosemoor (11 miles), Dartmoor (11 miles to the south of the farm), Devon’s Tarka Trail (great for cycling – try starting at the Puffing Billy, 13 miles from the farm), kayaking at Exeter, Exeter’s historic attractions etc etc. We keep a running list of things to do within 30 miles of Wheatland Farm, including ideas that are ‘good for kids’ and ‘time for me’, so please explore these pages on the Wheatland Farm website. We appreciate most people will be driving, and that’s understandable, but you’ll find public transport options and ideas too. This is an eco lodge holiday after all. Maybe you’d enjoy a day off from driving?

Access Questions?

Check out our full access statement for Honeysuckle Lodge or email or ring us at Wheatland Farm with any queries. If someone in your holiday party has restricted mobility or other access needs we have several items you can borrow (subject to availability – first come first served) so you don’t have to travel with too much stuff. These include a walking frame, a perching stool, a shower stool, and a baby carrier. Cots and high-chairs can usually be supplied (no charge) – just ask when booking the eco lodge.

Dogs are welcome too!

Your dogs are welcome with us at Wheatland Farm! There’s plenty of space to exercise them (though we do asks they are kept on a lead outside the lodges). Lots of Devon’s pubs and attractions are dog friendly too.
