Balebarn eco lodge’s veranda and Hot Tub offer stunning views over the wildlife pond
Balebarn Lodge is our most up-market and largest Devon eco lodge, and is our flagship project. It’s also our most accessible hoiday accommodation. Lime plastered and insulated with straw bales, it is sleek, modern yet rustic. It’s huge veranda has ample room for a Hot Tub and gives you glorious views of the lake.
This award winnning eco lodge is an ultra-low carbon building. The straw bales gave it the name ‘Balebarn Lodge’, but that’s just the start. Balebarn Lodge is our most exclusive holiday accommodation with many features: two bathrooms, four bedrooms (a double, a twin, a bunk and a single/double), woodburner, two ovens, dishwasher, spacious living area and heaps of inspirational upcycled style (oh, and don’t forget the optional Hot Tub). For groups of up to 12, it works well with Otter Cottage, which is just a stone’s throw away and sleeps a further 4. If you need space for an even bigger party, add 6 in Beech Lodge (which also has a Hot Tub) or 4 in each of Honeysuckle and Nuthatch Lodges
Balebarn Eco Lodge was the main reason Wheatland Farm won GOLD for sustainability in the Visit England Tourism Awards 2015. The judges said, “The new eco lodge has allowed new opportunities to show what is possible in terms of efficiency, ethical purchasing and upcycling. It further adds to the existing all-embracing experience offered by Wheatland which helps people to re-connect with nature and the simple pleasures of life – without having to be ‘wacky green’. Inspiring stuff!”
From frosted porthole windows in the bathroom (recycled microwave turntables) to cushions stitched from silk ties, everything in Balebarn lodge has been crafted to cosset you in truly sustainable comfort. Details like the original pillars and the wooden curtain supports (cut from our own hedgerows) give you a wonderful sense of place. From the straw that grew three fields away to the artwork on the walls, the eco lodge is part of the glorious Devon countryside.
This is better than glamping venues that can hold your holiday hostage to the weather. It isn’t ‘out of a box’ or ‘on trend’ fashion either. It’s a completely individual Devon eco lodge that emanates an authentic belief that there’s a better life to be had through sustainability. Come and experience it for yourself, and take some of that inspiration home.
Hot Tubs at Wheatland Farm’s Devon Eco Lodges
Love Hot Tubs? Or does the idea leave you cold? Don’t worry, the choice is yours. Both Beech Lodge and Balebarn Lodge have Hot Tubs, but Nuthatch and Honeysuckle Lodges do not. Even in Beech and Balebarn Lodges, the Hot Tubs are an optional extra, at a cost of £25 per stay. This covers an extra towel each, the water, daily checks and chlorination, and heating from 100% renewable energy.
If you want to see more about the adventure of building it, see Balebarn’s own archive in our greening blog.
