If you’re looking for a treat, One Market Street, also known as Cafe du Ville, in Hatherleigh, should be high on your list. They serve one of the best coffee we’ve found anywhere in Devon, and the cake is high up the ranking too.
Hatherleigh is about 8 miles from the lodges and cottage at Wheatland Farm, so it’s a short car ride or a perfectly doable bike ride on quiet roads. Either way, you get to cross Hatherleigh Moor, with great views of Dartmoor.
The cafe is on Market Street, a few doors down from The George Inn. You’ll probably find some on street parking without too much trouble (and there’s bike parking in the little public garden space just opposite).
Inside, the atmosphere is shabby chic compared to The George’s trad pub glam, but none the worse for it. There are papers out for you to read, and comfy seating as well as tables. The loo is out the back and it’s a bit of a wiggle to get there (The George is more accessible in this regard).
As for the coffee, well I [Maggie] would bike there any day just for that. And even better, it comes with some sustainability credentials too. What’s not to love!
Other things to do and places to visit nearby include the Hatherleigh Pottery, just up the street. And about 3 miles up the main road leaving Hatherleigh (A386) you’ll come to the village of Meeth which boasts the Devon Wildlife Trust’s Meeth Quary Nature Reserve – a good place to walk off the coffee and brownies.
