Trying out the wood fired pizza oven

Yes, we’ve added a wood fired pizza oven to Wheatland Farm’s eco lodges. It’s part of the new party barn. So even if the weather doesn’t hold, dinner won’t be damp.

Built with fire bricks, but also cob that came out of a rebuilt wall on the farm, and with a re-purposed chimney from an old woodburner, it fits with our recycling and repurposing ethos. All we need to do now is perfect the cooking technique. And we’re having fun with this particular task!

The trick is to get the pizza to slide off the peel. It works fine when they are fresh and well dusted, but takes a bit of practise when they are fully loaded with toppings. Probably the trick is to slightly pre cook the pizza bases before adding the deliciousness.

Bring your own pizza for cooking, or just the toppings

We think we’ll generally run the wood fired pizza oven one night a week during our peak summer holiday times – on a ‘bring your own pizza and join in basis’. Alternatively, let us know you’ll need a base (50p) and just bring your toppings.

Why don’t we go the whole hog and make everything? Well, we want you to have the pizza you like without the food waste catering for varying tastes would entail. And we’re not food retailers. So we’ll keep it simple. It should be a great way to get people staying in the lodges together for a bit of a social in the summer evenings. Bring a bottle too!

Exclusive use of the pizza oven

If you want to use the pizza oven exclusively for an evening, perhaps to celebrate a birthday, or if you’ve come as a group spread between more than one lodge, you can hire it and the party barn space. We’ll get the pizza fire going, give you some firewood for the fire pit, and come out later to check everything is safe once you’ve gone back to your lodges. There are extra plates, glasses and cutlery at the barn to, so it’s self contained. We’ll charge £15 for the evening’s use and do a quick clean up in the morning.
