Winter conservation work

It’s time to begin Wheatland Farm’s winter conservation work, starting with a bit of bramble bashing by the fishing pond.

This robin is keen to hunt around where we’ve cleared, searching for food. We won’t be clearing all the brambles (chance would be a fine thing…) as they provide good cover and food for lots of creatures, including dormice and spring-nesting birds.

But we’ll be cutting some back to stop them encroaching. There’s plenty to be getting on with – we need to be working on Popehouse Moor as well as up near the lodges this winter.

A few days of dry weather has meant we can make a start at least. But then again, you can’t work all the time can you…
