We’ve been down to the woods to bake some bread – in a campfire oven.
It’s pretty simple really. You make the dough, let it rise in an indestructible pan, and set that on the remains of a fire in a hole. Then cover over, and build another small fire on the lid for some top heat. Leave for about 40 mins then uncover with trepidation (and tongs). Fresh bread and honey beats marshmallows any time!
If you’re staying at Wheatland Farm and want to have a go at this, you can use the fire site in the lodge field. Come and borrow the cast iron pan though – don’t take the pans from the lodge kitchens! We’re also happy to supply some flour and a teaspoon of yeast – while stocks last.
