#30DaysWild No. 29. We might have been too successful in attracting wildlife to the lodges. We bought these little alder buckthorn plants because the larvae of brimstone butterflies eat them, and we wanted more butterflies at Wheatland Farm.
But hang about folks! There are only about 5 leaves on the plant and each is about half eaten by a green caterpillar. Give the poor thing a chance!
Should we pick off the caterpillars? We’re not even sure they are brimstones. Or should we just accept we’ve grown some pretty expensive bird food here, and possibly one or two bright yellow butterflies?
