A Water Shrew at the Wheatland Wildlife Pond

Our random act of wildness for day 6 of #30DaysWild is to follow in the footsteps of our recent guests in Otter Cottage, and sit stil enough to see the water shrew living at the wildlife pond. Here’s a clip we put together.

This little creature is very at home in the water, ducking under without hesitation and swimming merrily. It’s too small for a water vole, has the long nose of a shrew, and is larger than most other shrews – so we figure it must be a water shrew, Neomys fodiens. And if Margaret hadn’t mentioned it, we wouldn’t have known it was there – you do have to stay still and quiet to catch a glimpse. Thanks Margaret!
