Harvest mice – finding the evidence

Yes, we have harvest mice on Wheatland Farm – a survey confirms. Following on from Maggie’s recent harvest mouse training day we’ve been looking,  and found 3 nests to report to the Devon survey. Two were fairly scruffy ‘temporary’ nests (one in the lodge field, near Honeysuckle Lodge, one by the wildlife pond in front of Balebarn). The other was definitely a breeding nest  – nicely woven into a tussock of grass at the edge of the turbine field.  And we didn’t even get as far as Popehouse Moor, where there should be plenty more.

Now the big challenge is to find an active nest in summer and maybe put up a camera!
