Hire kayaks or canoes at Saddles and Paddles on the Quay at Exeter and head down river to the double locks pub, or even to the Turf Inn. A two hour booking will be ample time to potter down to the Double Locks and back. Choose a kayak (double or single) if you don’t mind getting wet. If you’d rather not drip into your drink, maybe a canoe is for you. Anyone who doesn’t paddle can hire a bike instead. You need to be able to swim of course, but no paddling experience is necessary. You’ll get a buoyancy aid and you’re set to go.
Saddles and Paddles isn’t the only kayak hire place in Exeter – there’s a water sports shop on the other side of the river too. And there’s convenient and good value parking at Haven Banks car park. Plus you’ll find lots of cafes nearby and of course the Quay Climbing Centre and Clip ‘n Climb. If the idea of a bike is more appealing, you could do a loop around the Exe Trail instead. Exeter is about 25 miles from our Devon Eco Lodges.
