Rashid, our natural beekeeping guru, came today to help Ian check through the hives. They are looking healthy, thank goodness, and we should be harvesting about 40 jars of honey in the next few days.
We’ve left plenty of stores for the bees to overwinter on, and have checked them over, as we don’t really plan to disturb them again until next spring.
In the picture, Rashid is just about to ‘smoke’ the colony. It mimics a forest fire in the bees’ natural habitat, causing them to gorge on honey in case the need to fuel an escape – and that makes them docile.
Ian got two inside his veil, but still no stings.
