On 3 September at 4:00 you can enjoy an informal guided walk through the garden of Killerton House (one of the National Trust's Devon properties) with a member of staff or a volunteer from the garden team.  Killterton is about 21 miles from the cottage and lodges. No need to book - normal admission charges apply. 

On Saturday 4 September Sarah Jane Morris plays at the Plough Arts Centre, Torrington, at 8.00pm. This sensual singer-songwriter straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range that rumbles from the heels of her size eight shoes to the tips of her flame-red mane. On Sunday 5 September there's a Food Glorious Food Festival  at another of Devon's National Trust property - Knightshayes Court. Celebrate the diversity of local food and drink at this summer food fair - from meats and cheeses to preserves and organic herbal teas. Browse, sample and buy from high quality producers in the glorious surroundings of Knightshayes Court. Children's event tent. Cookery demonstrations.  Normal Admission Charges Apply. On Sunday 5 September you can meet a Victorian laundry maid and discover more about her busy working life at Killerton House - that's about 21 miles from your self catering accommodation. Event runs from 2pm - 4pm. Normal admission charges.

On 9 September join the chefs at Knightshayes Court as they choose fresh fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden. Sharon or Emma will be happy to answer your questions about how to make the most of fresh, seasonal produce in your own kitchen.  Normal admission charges. On 10 September you can ask yourself Is elbow grease better than Mr Sheen? Drop in to Castle Drogo and discover how housekeeping has changed over the last 100 years and whether we can learn anything from the scullery maids of yesteryear. The conservation team will be cooking up some pungent historic cleaning recipes as well as demonstrating how the National Trus does things today.  Normal Admission Charges Apply.

On Saturday 11 September Knighthayes Court is open for free as part of Heritage Open Days (11:00 - 17:00). Free entry for all to house and garden, and a talk on heritage varieties of fruit and vegetables with Brendan Kelly in the kitchen garden between 2pm and 3pm.  Knightshayes Court is about 25 miles from the cottage and lodges.

On Saturday 11 September Lydford Gorge is open for free as part of Heritage Open Days (10:00 - 17:00). Explore the gorge for free. Learn about the work the rangers do to keep the paths open for visitors.  The gorge is about 21 miles away from our Devon farm, on the western edge of Dartmoor.

On Saturday 11 September Finch Foundry is open for free as part of Heritage Open Days (11:00 - 17:00). Free day to explore the last remaining, working, water-powered forge in England - part of Devon's unique industrial heritage.  Finch Foundry is in the village of Sticklepath, about 13 miles from the cottage and lodges on the northern edge of Dartmoor.

On Saturday 11 September Castle Drogo is open for free as part of Heritage Open Days (11:00 - 17:00). Visit the Castle and groundsand take advantage of a behind the scenes roof tour (tours every half an hour 11 - 4.30). Tickets for roof tours (£1.50) available on the day only, from Visitor Reception.  Castle Drogo is about 17 miles from the cottage and lodges.

On Saturday 11 September Arlington Court and the National Trust's Carriage Collection is open for free as part of Heritage Open Days (11:00 - 15:00). Meet a cast of characters from 1883, who lived and worked on the Arlington Estate. From gamekeeper to coachman they all have an interesting tale to tell.  Dogs on leads welcome. Three tours at various times from 11.30, last 45mins- 1 hour. Arlington Court is about 27 miles from your self catering accommodation.

On Saturday 11 September (8.00pm) Christine Tobin, Irish-born singer-songwriter, performs at The Plough Arts Centre in Torrington. Her style, although rooted in jazz, is steeped in the singer-songwriter tradition. Her sound is rich, authentic and deeply expressive and was described by the Guardian as "Tobin's 24 carat voice" while praising her both for the poetry of her compositions and her golden voice. Much of her repertoire is self-penned and Tobin has received many accolades for her skills as a writer and arranger. Romantic and radical, Christine is a musical free spirit who in 2008 was named Best Vocalist at the BBC Jazz Awards. She is accompanied at The Plough by Phil Robson on guitar, Dave Whitford on double bass and Thebe Lipere on percussion. Tickets 01805 624624. Full £14.00    Concession £12.00    Supporter £10.00. On Sunday 12 September enjoy a Different Point of View at the National Trust's Killerton House. Discover the wonderful house and park at Killerton with an exciting trail and activities that bring to life momentous times from the past that touched the Acland family. As a special concession, entry to the house is free for participants to enjoy the 'Elegance' fashion exhibition. If you wish to dress up in 'elegant'outdoor attire it will help the atmosphere. Remember to bring your camera and a picnic if you would like to join the Victorian picnic in the orchard at 12.45. No need to book. Assistance dogs welcome. Runs from 11am - 4pm. Also on Sunday 12 September there's free entry to the National Trust's Clyston Mill, Budlake Post Office and Marker's Cottage between 14:00 and 17:00 at the Killerton Estate. It's all part of the Heritage Open Days scheme.

On 15 September you can Meet the Builders!  at Killerton House. Step behind-the-scenes and visit Killerton's estate yard, which maintains the buildings on this 6,000 acre estate. See how windows are made, how lime wash is used and much, much more!  Runs from 11:00.

On 17 September at 8.00pm there's a A Plough Event at R.H.S. Rosemoor Gardens when Show of Hands, Steve Knightley and Phil Beer, perform. Widely acknowledged as the finest acoustic roots duo in England, Knightley, who writes most of their inspired material and Beer, a dazzling multi instrumentalist, have built up a huge following which has seen them sell out the Royal Albert Hall three times, headline major festivals from Glastonbury to WOMAD and play all over the world. Voted Best Live Act by the public at the 2004 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the jury is still out on just what kind of music they play. A genre defying mix of rock, roots, blues, country and trad, and often influenced by the music of other countries, it is played out on an array of instruments from slide guitar to fiddle, mandolin to South American cuatro. They sold out at RHS Rosemoor in 2007 but with two nights to choose from you'll still need to book early…. Free access to gardens from 4pm for ticket holders. 18 to 30 September is British Food Fortnight. There's lots going  on in Devon.

On 18 September there's a a farmers' market at Killerton House.  Lots of fresh, tempting, local produce for sale. 10.30am - 1.30pm. Killerton is about 21 miles away from the cottage and lodges.

On 22 September a workshop at Castle Drogo can help you Get to grips with your Digital Camera. Enjoy an informative day with local photographer Adrian Oakes, learning how to get the very best from your digital camera. The workshop includes power point presentations using a high resolution projector, practical sessions, photography techniques, composition, understanding depth of field, using RAW, filters, macro, how to shoot panoramas,the best equipment to use, discussions and a chance to try out various camera equipment. On 24 September at 8.30pm The Dead Betas, Monobloggers, Gutted for Dave take to the stage at the Plough Arts Centre to put on a night of crazed punk music mixed with clunge busting dance music from all areas of dance, trance, drum & bass and dubstep. 'Beefed up synth punk like nothing you've heard before, animals on the stage, a performance worth seeing every time'. Definitely one for those that love to dance! Support comes all the way from Wolverhampton, from two young bands that are always worth the watch, the energetic and exciting Monobloggers, and the grrrl punk anthems of Gutted for Dave. A gig not to be missed, for all you punk lovers and ravers alike! Bar ID required (passport/driving license) 8pm doors for 8-30pm. Standing gig  £4 in adv/£5 door/ £6 balcony seats. Or if punk's not your thing, on Saturday 25 September at 8.00pm enjoy Caruso and The 'Quake, also at the Plough. The Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso was at the height of his fame when he performed Carmen at the San Francisco Opera House in April 1906. He woke-up the next morning to find his hotel room collapsing on top of him. 'Quake' tells of Caruso's escape through the earthquake, the fires and the army gun powdering the city. But can he shake off the ghosts from his past and the terrible choices he has to make to survive? Beautiful storytelling and live opera singing combine to reveal the heart behind a legend featuring live music from Puccini, Rossini, Leoncavallo, Tosti and the immortal song that Caruso introduced to the World: "O Sole mio". On Saturday 25 September and Sunday 26 September there's a WW2 Event at Castle Drogo when vehicles, displays and re-enactments from the Military Vehicle Trust recreate the atmosphere of war time Britain. There will be a weapons demonstration at 12 noon and battle re-enactment at 2.30pm by the MVT each day. Step back in time and follow the family trail to find out what life was like as a war time evacuee at Castle Drogo. Normal Admission Charges Apply. Runs from 11am - 5pm. On Saturday 25 September there's a Wild Night Feast at the National Trust's Arlington Court. Enjoy a feast of wild, seasonal, foods, all harvested from the estate and local producers followed by an evening walk in the wilderness with bushcraft survival expert Dave Roderick to look at stellar navigation and nature at night!  Booking Essential 01271 850296 . Assistance Dogs only are welcome. Children welcome if they are happy to eat anything!  Take suitable outdoor clothing and a torch. Runs from 6.15pm - 10pm. All Tickets £20. On Sunday 26 September you can bee part of The Big Pick up! Help to harvest the apples from the Killerton orchard for use in Killerton's award-winning cider.  A fun afternoon suitable for all the family - 2pm - 4pm. Normal admission charges. Killerton is about 21 miles from the cottage and lodges.

On Sunday 26 September you can joind a Dog Walk with the Warden at the National Trust's Arlington Court and Carriage Museum. On 30 September relax with An Evening with Johnnie Walker at the Plough Arts Centre from 8.00pm.
