The Dartmoor National Parks Authority organise guided walks - here are some close to our self-catering accommodation during September 2011. Please note, unfortunately you can't take your dog on these walks.
On 9 September at 10:30 a 2.5hr Dartmoor Guided Walk sets off from Bellever. This is a chance to go on a joint walk led by DNPA archaeologists and a member of the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust to visit some of the many prehistoric sites within Bellever Forest and out on the Moor, and to learn about the Dartmoor Pony along the way. The walk will visit a recently excavated prehistoric round house.You can also visit the Bronze Age Exhibition at the Postbridge Information Centre. Meet in the Forestry Commission car park near Bellever. Turn off the B3212 Mortonhampstead to Two Bridges road towards Bellever just after Postbridge. It's about a mile down this road (and about 29 from the cottage and lodges). Costs £5.5.
On Saturday 17 September a Dartmoor Guided Walk sets off from Lydford High Down at 10:30. This is a 4hr walk entilted Brat Tor and the Man Behind its Cross. Enjoy a walk in the landscape that inspired William Widgery and his son Frederick, Dartmoor artists whose work spanned the 19th and 20th Centuries. Guide A Satow Distance 7m/11km. Take the A386 Okehampton to Plymouth road. Opposite the turning for Lydford and just before the Dartmoor Inn there's a track - take that to the car park where you'll meet. Lydford is about 21 miles fro the cottage and lodges. Walk costs £7.
On Sunday 18 September join a 3.5hr Dartmoor Guided Walk leaving Okehampton Moor at 17:30. See the sun set from Yes Tor, the highest point (nearly) of Dartmoor. Please take a torch. Guide J Whiting. The walk starts at Okehampton moor (SX 596 922). Follow signs for the youth hostel / army camp. Continue past the camp and cross a bridge at a brook. Park at top of the hill on the right at a fork. Costs £7.
