The devilsbit scabious is in full flower on Popehouse Moor. This is one of the really important flowers in culm grassland, because the larvae of the rare marsh fritillary butterfly feed on the leaves in spring. That's part of the reason we have to graze the moor - so the grass doesn't overwhelm these shorter wildflowers, driving them out.


I love this pretty purple-blue flower. It starts as such a tight pincushion of a flower head, then opens out, all frills and ruffles.
And the insects appreciate it too - even when the bloom gets a bit tousled and bedraggled...
