I've been waiting for this... Proper primroses.

The primulas have been out for ages, and I enjoy their early cheer. But a proper primrose is the pale early-spring-sunshine kind in a woodland. So here's one from ours.

The green spears of bluebells are coming up through autumn's leaves as well. Great tits are proclaiming 'teacher! teacher! teacher!' - a sure sign of spring.

And I even saw two white tail bumblebees in the garden on 23 Feb. At least, that's probably what they were. There are 26 species of bumblebee in Britain, and some of them look confusingly similar. The ones I saw would have been bumbling queens just out of hibernation and looking for somewhere to build this year's nest - in a bank or a stone wall, perhaps in an old mouse nest. I hope they find somewhere near the house as I love the drowsy sound of bumblebees at summer flowers.
