Stay in one of Wheatland Farm’s four self catering Devon eco lodges, or try Otter Cottage, by the farm pond. We’re a multi-award winning low impact ‘green’ tourism business, but you don’t need to be super-green to holiday here – it’s for everyone. Relax in the tranquil haven of 21 acres farmed for Devon’s wildlife and your enjoyment. Let us make your self catering holiday or off-season eco break easier by ordering local food ahead. And if you want to take a car free Devon holiday we’ll collect you from the station or bus.
Whether you want a base in North Devon, love nature, want to walk with your dog, cycle the glorious Devon countryside, or just relax with a book, our eco lodges are for you. We’re more than just accommodation, we’re a place to be, offering a nationally-recognised nature reserve to explore, bikes, boats, wildlife, walking notes, countryside craft activities in the summer holidays, and always a warm and helpful welcome.
Short Breaks In Devon
Walking, cycling, fishing, good food and pubs – Devon has it all. Wheatland Farm is open year-round and offers short breaks all year apart from 6 weeks in the summer school holidays (full weeks only). We are in the heart of Devon yet offer incredibly peaceful surroundings. Many guests just come to relax and chill out. Order some Devon delicacies from our neighbour’s farm shop or let the nearby award-winning pub kitchens take the strain!
Borrow our reclaimed bikes (or hire the electric ones) and explore the local area (you’ll find a vineyard, tea shops, tiny churches, nature reserves). Stride out on northern Dartmoor (one of the last wild places to escape in England). Leave the car behind for a day and go exploring on the bus (journey through the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and end up at its special beach). Or let us take you on a guided nature walk (or even just take your book down to the woodland pond on Popehouse Moor).
All ages are welcome at Wheatland Farm and it’s a great place for a multi-generational get together. Kids and grandparents are especially welcome. There’s lots going on right here: 21 acres to explore, cows to visit in summer, hens, fishing, boats on the pond, bikes of all sizes, outdoor chess and draughts, badminton and of course a swing and slide. So the children will be happy while you relax and catch up. North Devon’s attractions are within easy reach, and after a great day, why not all decamp to a nearby pub for a family friendly meal out. More about family holidays on our ‘families welcome’ page.
Why put your dogs in kennels when they’ll be welcome here at Wheatland Farm? Ask us about good dog walks – we can lend you maps too. Most Devon pubs welcome well-behaved dogs, and dogs are welcome everywhere on the farm apart from the 7 acre SSSI nature reserve. More information about bringing your pets on our ‘dogs welcome’ page.
Green tourism is at the very heart of our Devon self catering cottage and lodges. So come and find out how easy it is to have an eco friendly holiday in Devon. Check out our environment policy, our ‘greening’ blog pages where we record how we strive to make the business sustainable, and Wheatland Farm’s facebook page – for the more informal stuff! We also accept volunteers through the WWOOF scheme (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). If you’re a WWOOFer and want to stay please see our volunteering page and get in touch. For more about our awards see our Sustainability Awards page.
Accessible Devon holidays
When people talk about accessible holidays they often think only of holidays for wheelchair users. But while our Balebarn Eco Lodge is accessible to wheelchairs (and offers a wet room shower), we think making holidays accessible goes much wider than that. Really, it’s just a formal way to say we try to be helpful. If you tell us what you need, we’ll do our best, whether it’s providing extra bins, arranging an early or late arrival, loaning children’s equipment, a walking aid for someone less mobile, adjusting a farm walk etc. Balebarn Lodge has level access throughout. The two smaller chalet lodges (Nuthatch Lodge and Honeysuckle Lodge) are on one level internally, but have steps up to the door (with handrails). Honeysuckle Lodge has a shower only, Nuthatch Lodge has a shower over a short bath (good for kids). Beech Lodge has one internal step and steps up to the main door. Otter Cottage is the only one that has stairs to bedrooms.
